The neighboring provinces are Trat in the east and <a href="samet-travel-guide.htm">Rayong</a>, <a href="pattaya-travel-guide.htm">Chonburi</a>, Chachoengsao and Sa Kaeo. The provincial slogan is Magnificent Waterfalls, Fruit City, Good Breeding Peppercorns Loads of Gems, Chanthabun Mat, Fertile Nature, Gathering Place of King Taksin the Great s Liberation Army. The word Chantha originates from the Sanskrit word Chandra meaning moon, and the word buri from Sanskrit Puri meaning town or city. Their influence can be seen in the architecture of many buildings including the largest Catholic cathedral in Thailand, catering to a sizeable Christian population. As well as a signature noodle dish, the province is a major centre of ruby and sapphire mining, with dealers turning Si Chan Road into a great weekend market for gemstones. For a bit of fun, Oasis Sea World, a breeding and conservation centre for river dolphins, puts on daily shows. Or for a different type of show, try the Chamsom Crocodile Farm and Zoo, just off the Sukhumvit Road. The Underwater Archaeological Museum at Khai Noen Wong displays relics and treasures recovered from old sunken ships, including a lot of pottery. <br /><br /><span style="font-size:16px; font-weight:bold;">Magnificent Waterfalls</span> <br /><br /><table align="left"><tr><td><img src="../content_images/thailand/Chanthaburi_waterfalls.jpg" alt="Khao Khitchakut National Park, Chanthaburi, Thailand" /></td></tr></table>There are spectacular waterfalls at Khao Khitchakut National Park, whose Krathing Falls courses down 13 levels, and at Phliu-Kha Sabap National Park, with a royal connection when King Chulalongkorn visited the Phliu Falls and built a memorial there. About 70 kilometres from Chanthaburi is Khao Soi Dao Waterfall. The trail to the 15level waterfall is amid unspoiled forests with a large variety of butterfly and bird. As it is a waterfall within a wildlife sanctuary, visitors are permitted only daytime only. <br /><br /><span style="font-size:16px; font-weight:bold;">The Chanthaburi Fruit Festival</span> <br /><br />Annually held in May, the fair aims to promote local products and various kinds of fruit grown in the province. The fair features exhibitions on agricultural innovations as well as agricultural products. Stalls selling local crafts, jewellery, food products and seafood make the fair fun to visit. Besides, visitors get to see how famous local products such as preserved durian are made; or they can have a good time watching a fruit contest and a beauty contest. Equally colourful are the names given to the gemstones by the local residents such as - Pailin or Blue Sapphire, the King Ruby or Siam Ruby, the Bussaracum or Yellow Sapphire, the Green Sapphire, the Oriental Emerald and the cabochon-shaped Star Sapphire. Chanthaburi has long been an important centre for the local gems and jewellery industry. <br /><br /><span style="font-size:12px; font-weight:bold;">Famous Chanthaburi Mats</span> <br />The art of mat-weaving has long been practiced in Chanthaburi ever since the late Ayutthaya period. The local raw material used is slender sedge which thrives in the lowlands of the Chanthaburi district of Bahn Somdej Ngarm and the Laem Sing District of Bahn Bang Srakow. Mats are made in many villages in these districts. When the late Queen Ramphai Bharni resided in her Suan Bahn Kaew Palace in Chanthaburi, she encouraged mat-weavers to develop greater creativity in the design, the use of color, and increased functionality of these handcrafted products. New lines emerged such as business folders and ladies' handbags. With such refinement, the quality of their products were greatly enhanced making this cottage industry famous throughout the land. <br /><br /><span style="font-size:12px; font-weight:bold;">Chanthaburi Noodles</span> <br />Chanthaburi is famous for its rice noodles. Traditional Thai cooks unanimously agree that the best choice of noodles for use in the famous  Pad Thai fried rice noodle dish must be from Chanthaburi. <br /><br /><span style="font-size:12px; font-weight:bold;">Top Quality Pepper</span> <br />Chanthaburi is well-known for its pepper and forest produce which have long been exported and generates valuable revenue for the state. Chanthaburi pepper is noted for its outstanding quality, particularly its distinctive aroma and potency, hence it is in great demand. Chanthaburi's climate and soil is conducive to the cultivation of pepper and it is grown throughout the province.
